I’m only 17 but very interested in being more eco-friendly. I’m in my last year of secondary school, so I’m still living with my parents in what is currently a 5 person house. That means a lot of decisions are out of my hands. I can suggest that we buy eco-friendly products and eat less meat, but it’s my parents money and they’re trying to support a 5 person family, so I have to respect that.

So what I’m asking is, what steps can I take, despite my age, as an individual that would help to decrease my personal carbon footprint?

If your parents don’t recycle, try to have your own bin for recycling. They may start start doing the same. Stress the financial gain of being eco-friendly (e.g. by saving energy you save money. Personally speaking this works but I am not in favour of this motive). Stick post-its on the appliances and switches they forget on or on standby. These are just some ideas. Good luck!!!

try to buy clothes from charity shops or car boot sales, they are cheaper and more eco-friendly as no new clothes need to be made. Also if you buy them from a charity shop the money gets put to good use!:)

its like at work, no one really cares. i go round like a magpie grabbing anything that can be recycled before it goes in the bin. Another one i do is go round switching things off behind people.

Well im only 9 and i have persuaded my mum and dad to save energy, recycle, buy eco friendly products and grow their onw fruit and veg. Im sure you and your family can do that!
