Penguin's profile

Polar-bear-tongue
1.53 planets

I want to try and stop people thinking about the return on their financial investment and to start thinking about their environmental investment. This will be very hard as all retailers market us with the financial gains, or the length of time it will take us to recoup our investment. Too much about me, and not enough about our planet

Take a trip to your local Farmers' MarketHelp

A farmers' market is one in which local farmers or producers sell their own produce. All products sold should have been grown, reared, caught, brewed, pickled, baked, smoked or processed by the stallholder. FARMA, the National Farmers' Retail & Markets Association, independently assesses and certifies the markets so you can be confident you are supporting your local community and economy, and reducing your food miles.

    Switch to a water meterHelp

Did you know: We all use different amounts of water at home but homes without meters all pay the same rate, based on our property's rateable value. If you only use small amounts of water then shifting to a meter may cut your bills as you only pay for the water you use. It is free to switch and you could save up to 5-10% off your water bill. You can check on the Uswitch website to find out if you can get a water meter fitted in your area.

    Avoid buying peat-based compostHelp

Did you know: The desire for beautiful gardens can put increasing pressure on our remaining peat bogs, which are often wildlife oases. We can easily avoid using peat compost - ideally by starting a compost heap or a wormery. About a third of our waste can be composted - kitchen scraps, grass cuttings and so-on. If this kind of matter is thrown out and sent to landfill, it turns into methane - a potent greenhouse gas which, like CO2, contributes to global warming. Otherwise there are readily available alternatives on the market including bark-based compost and garden waste recycled and packaged by councils.

After all this, Penguin will have a footprint of 1.25 planets, and a carbon footprint of 4.33 tonnes per annum
