Drink tap water instead of bottled waterHelpDid you know: Bottled water costs around 500 times more than tap water, and the industry emits thousands of tonnes of CO2 every year. In the UK, we have a reliable and safe supply of mains drinking water, and therefore drinking bottled water offers no proven health benefits. Because no materials are used in its individual packaging, and it is generally sourced locally - rather than in Fiji or the Alps! - drinking tap water is a greener, and much cheaper, option. The Food Standards Agency recommends we drink 1.2l of water a day, so if you do want to carry water with you, re-use another bottle.
Avoid heavily-processed food and go for healthier alternativesHelpDid you know: Processed foods often have a high content of salts, saturated fats and sugars, so eating fresh unprocessed food helps maintain a healthy diet. The manufacture of processed foods uses large amounts of energy, water and materials in production, chilling, packaging and transport as well as producing large amounts of waste.
Unplug appliances when not in use and avoid using stand-byHelpDid you know: Some appliances, like digital set top boxes, use nearly as much energy in standby mode as when they are switched on. Almost a billion pounds of electricity is wasted every year in the UK by people leaving appliances on standby!
Run your washing machine at 40°C or lessHelpDid you know: Cutting your washing cycle temperature from 60 to 40°C means you use a third less energy
