Food
Buy locally grown and produced foodHelp
Did you know: Buying local food will generally result in a lower footprint. For example, every tonne of strawberries we fly into the UK from north Africa or the Middle East releases more than four and a half tonnes of CO2, whereas the same amount of locally grown, seasonal, strawberries will only release 17kg - one-three-hundredth the amount! Buying more locally grown food can reduce your food footprint by about 10%. However, it is vitally important that we don't ignore the value of fairly traded products as a means of income for producers in developing countries. Therefore when you do buy produce from overseas try to buy from fairly traded sources.

Invest in a smart meterHelp
Did you know: Smart meters act like hi-tech energy 'clocks' and, at any point in time, they will let you read how much electricity you are using. They also allow you to find out which activities and appliances in your home use the most electricity and will let you use that information to reduce your use, saving money. And if you have microgeneration capabilities at home - like PV solar panels - which are generating more electricity than you are using, the meter will tell you how much money you could make by selling the excess power back to the Grid!

If you have to buy a new car, make sure it has an A or B energy efficiency ratingHelp
Did you know: Similar to that for your fridge and washing machine, an independent labelling system now rates cars on their environmental performance. You can use this information to choose a low-carbon car, preferably one with a rating of A or B.

Donate old mobile phones to charityHelp
Did you know: Don't just trade in your mobile phone every year for a newer model as it takes huge amounts of materials and energy to produce these sorts of gadgets. And the rechargeable battery and other components such as the LCD display have potentially toxic components. Research suggests that there are over 20 million potentially toxic redundant mobile phones in the UK. WWF and other charities collect unwanted mobile phones.
