Factors contributing to my footprint score:
I have not flown for 5 years and plan not to do so again except in emergencies.
I work from home and only travel short distances infrequently by car to Woking or my allotment, and to somewhere in the UK for holidays.
My house has internally insulated solid walls, although its roof insulation is only 8 inches (which was higher than the standard at the time, but cannot be increased as most of the roof is attic with sloping ceiling immediately under the roof line.)
I have had solar hot water for a number of years, and now have solar PV.
I heat only the rooms that we use, using thermostatic radiator valves.
I have signed up to a number of the WWF eco-pledges/tips, many of which have reduced our footprint further.
I am primarily vegetarian, and save meat for high holidays and family birthdays.
I use Freecycle often to exchange stuff rather than buy new.

If you have to buy a new car, make sure it has an A or B energy efficiency ratingHelp

Did you know: Similar to that for your fridge and washing machine, an independent labelling system now rates cars on their environmental performance. You can use this information to choose a low-carbon car, preferably one with a rating of A or B.

  • Travel

Lobby local authority to improve transport links

  • Home

    Buy a rainwater buttHelp

Did you know: If properly positioned, this will let you collect rainwater runoff from your roof and guttering and will save you from using drinking quality tap water to water your plants in the drier months.

  • Stuff

    Return unwanted appliances to manufacturersHelp

Did you know: Every year about 1 million tonnes of waste electronic and electrical equipment (WEEE) are discarded in the UK.

After all this, ClarePalgrave will have a footprint of 1.16 planets, and a carbon footprint of 4.19 tonnes per annum
